Free School is postponed until the fall, so once the leaves start to turn pretty colors  prick your ears for exciting free school news!

Also, we will still be looking for spaces throughout the summer, so if you or someone you know may have a space to offer, please get in touch with us. Spaces need not be fancy, often classes have been offered in someone’s living room. You can e mail us at guelphfreeschool@gmail.com

To members of the Guelph Community:

Interested in supporting a creative, education-based community project? Want to find a way to give back to the Guelph community? The Guelph Free School needs your help! The Guelph Free School is facilitated by a collective of volunteers who coordinate free classes and workshops. We aim to make education about learning, sharing, building, and resisting; to create a new model of education where everyone has a chance to teach and learn in a safe space; and to create spaces that encourage diversity, recognizing the roles that various forms of oppression play in our lives.  We have two types of education opportunities that we are currently organizing: 6-8 week long courses and weekend workshops.

We are writing to you to see if you might be interested in supporting the Guelph Free School through the donation of space for a short period of time to host a class or workshop.  In particular, we are looking for spaces for any of the weekends in April for workshops in bookbinding, Zen Buddhism, and the relationship between Queerness, Sex & Chronic Illness. Classes would range in length from approximately 3 hours to a full day and we expect to have around 10 participants, but our time and number of participants are also flexible depending on what spaces are available to us. We are also looking for spaces that could commit to 1.5 hours once a week for a duration of 8 weeks to host weekly classes, such as meditation, first aid, or anti oppression. However, if you do not a space available during these times but do for other times, please let us know as all of our times are flexible.

We appreciate your consideration and look forward to your response.  Should you have any further questions please send us an email at guelphfreeschool@gmail.com.

Thank you,

Guelph Free School – Workshop organizing team!

Hi everyone!

The Guelph Free School is back! Spring semester will start the week of March 21 and we are currently seeking class proposals. If you haven’t heard of the Guelph Free School, we are a collective of volunteers who coordinate free classes and workshops in topics ranging from creative writing to language, choir, anything you can think of! The Guelph Free School aims to make education about learning, sharing, building, and resisting; to create a new model of education where everyone has a chance to teach and learn in a safe space; and to create spaces that encourage diversity, recognizing the roles that various forms of oppression play in our lives.

The free school model started in Spain in the late 1800s as response to the increasingly institutionalized, commodified, hierarchical learning of the educational system at the time. Noticing many of the same trends in modern education, several years ago a group of people gathered together with the idea of making a new, accessible educational alternative. Classes are free to attend, as well as free and open in the way they’re structured. Students are not forced to learn anything or given tests, and teachers/facilitators are seen as resources of knowledge rather than as authoritarian figures. The classes are discussion based, so that everyone can contribute knowledge, experience and expertise.

This is the call-out that the collective does each semester requesting new submissions. Application forms can be downloaded from http://www.guelphfreeschool.wordpress.com. The deadline for submissions is February 24.

Classes in the works include: fitness, nonviolent communication, creative writing, French book club dinner, choir and much more!  Please do not be shy, share that skill you have with others! We are in need of people to facilitate basic skills/services like English as a Second Language or Tenants Rights. Don’t want to facilitate an entire class?  Try a shorter workshop instead (see website for details). We are also looking for new collective members. Want to participate in GFS classes? Stay tuned for more information regarding the session of classes starting March 21st. See our website for more info: http://www.guelphfreeschool.wordpress.com.

Hope to see you soon,

The Guelph Free School Collective
